Woodmark
Woodmark was founded in 1964 by Elliott Sherrill Wood, a man whose roots go deep into the Southern furniture industry, and a man who is known by many as "Mr. Furniture". The company was one of the first to specialize and standardize its focus on upholstered chairs, which resulted in product value unequaled in the market place. All unneeded expense, anything that added nothing to the value of the chair, was eliminated. The Company was dedicated totally to the integrity of product, the comfort, quality and scrupulous value of chairs. Elliott Wood began his career for his father's wholesale rug company, and founded his own retail store in the depression year 1932. His work included a custom upholstery shop manufacturing chairs, sofas and loveseats. Wood bought frames on the New York market from such acknowledged masters as Charles Assenze, Leopold Columbo and others who supplied frames to the finest custom shops in the nation. Fabrics were supplied by some of the outstanding names in the textile world, including Arther Lee, Stroheim and Roman, Jofa, Schumacher and Cheney Brothers. Wood's retail business gave him access to the best upholstery plants where he could study and absorb their principles of construction and fine workmanship.
In 1937, Elliott Wood converted his retail shop entirely to the manufacturing of furniture, and he named his company Heritage Furniture. The original plant was on Broad Street, and later moved to English Street in High Point, North Carolina. In 1946 Wood christened Founders Furniture Company, and some years later was one of the original stockholders in Henredon Furniture. Wood went on to start Woodmark in 1964. The other companies Wood was instrumental in establishing in the early days of his career continue today as active manufacturers in the furniture industry, companies whose names are synonymous with fine-crafted, quality furniture.
As Woodmark continued to grow under Wood's management, he went on to start Stanton-Cooper, (manufacturer of sofas, sofa beds, and loveseats), Dansen Contemporary, (manufacturer of modern and contemporary upholstery), Bradington-Young, (recliners), and several other furniture-related companies. Elliott Wood's sights were always toward fine quality and the upper echelons of taste. He helped raise the taste level of Southern furniture manufacturers, in general, to the enviable level it has now earned. Seventeen individuals who worked for Elliott Wood later became Presidents of furniture companies, including the largest and most important companies in the industry today.
